A big Glasgow Rangers claim has emerged on Ross Wilson and Giovanni van Bronckhorst's plans for the remainder of the summer transfer window...

What's the talk?

Rangers reporter Joshua Barrie has tipped the Ibrox club to sign a natural left-back to replace Calvin Bassey after the signing of Ben Davies.

The Gers have brought the left-footed defender in on a permanent deal but the journalist does not believe that he will be tasked with filling two roles within the back four throughout the campaign.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel, he said: “I think quite an exciting signing (Davies) on the face of it – maybe not exciting, but sensible.

“I think, off the cuff, definitely being brought in to play centre-back; I don’t think he’ll be coming in to play left-back or cover at left-back at all.

“I think you’ll see a different player come in at left-back.”

Supporters will be excited

This update will leave supporters excited for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it suggests that the club are not finished with their incoming business for the summer. Ross Wilson has brought in John Souttar, Rabbi Matondo, Antonio Colak, Tom Lawrence, and Davies to Ibrox on permanent deals and now looks set to add at least one more name to that list.

Fans can now expect Rangers to target a natural left-back and have something to look forward to in terms of transfers over the next few weeks as Wilson attempts to strengthen the squad.

They will also be excited because it indicates that Davies has not been brought in to be a utility player. This will delight the fanbase as his form for Sheffield United last season suggests that he has the quality to be an important centre-back for van Bronckhorst, as he caught the eye in the second tier for the Blades.

In the 2021/22 Championship campaign, the former Liverpool man averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 6.97 across 22 games. He won an outstanding 71% of his ground duels and made 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game, which offers a preview of what he could do for the Gers next term if he plays in his natural position.

Bringing in an out-and-out left-back option will also provide Borna Barisic with competition. The Croatia international is currently the only senior player in the squad in his position and signing someone to challenge him will avoid any complacency setting in throughout 2022/23.
