Reports earlier this summer revealed that Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst had been offered the chance to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks, with more recent speculation suggesting that the England international is "expected to leave" the Premier League side in the current window.

The 26-year-old has fallen out of favour after a difficult last few seasons at Spurs, although a player of his undoubted talent could well prove a notable coup for the Ibrox outfit, as well as proving a perfect heir to veteran gem, Steven Davis.

The 37-year-old is currently enjoying his second spell in Glasgow having previously departed the club back in 2012, before eventually re-joining - initially on loan - from Southampton back in January 2019.

In total, the 128 cap stalwart has racked up 334 appearances for the Old Firm giants in all competitions, chipping in with 25 goals and providing an impressive haul of 70 assists in that time, while winning four league titles across his two spells at the club.

After signing a new one-year extension at the end of last term, the former Saints man has already made an impressive start to the new campaign, having impressed manager Giovanni van Brocnckhorst following his first outing of the season in the 2-0 victory over Kilmarnock.

While such an influential, 90-minute display has proved that the ageing gem is still able to make a telling impact, it remains to be seen just how much longer the 5 foot 8 maestro will be able to carry on, hence the need for a potential long-term replacement.

In Winks, the Scottish Premiership side could well have found the ideal heir, with the ten-cap "baller" - as described by one source - also possessing that innate ability to run a game without needing to rely on physical strength or a powerful stature.

The slight, 5 foot 10 gem has been lauded for his ball-playing talent in recent times, notably earning comparisons to Barcelona's legendary duo of Xavi and Andreas Iniesta from former boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Clearly a real technical asset, the £13.5m-rated man has also been dubbed "amazing" by Pochettino in the past, with the Argentine having thought highly of the academy graduate during his time in charge in north London.

The years since the 50-year-old's sacking have seen the £91k-per-week ace someone shunted out into the cold, although when he has been handed a chance under current boss Antonio Conte he has seemingly taken it, as he notably ranks in the top 2% for progressive passes among those in his position across Europe's top five leagues, as well as in the top 12% for passes attempted.

Clearly a forward-thinking midfielder, that approach seemingly mirrors that of Davis, with the experienced ace also ranking in top 17% for attempted passes among those in his position, as a result of his European involvement in recent times.

Hailed as his nation's "greatest" ever player by compatriot Chris Brunt, the current Gers star will be no easy act to follow - for both club and country - although for those at Ibrox, Winks perhaps represents an ideal fit to pick up his midfield baton.

As Davis has proven, ability and quality in possession - something Winks has in abundance - is more than a match for strength and brawn.
