Rangers: Ibrox outfit eyeing swoop for Liverpool’s Ben Davies

Glasgow Rangers are believed to be readying a bid for Liverpool defender, Ben Davies, amid the impending departure of Calvin Bassey.

What’s the word?

According to The Scottish Sun, the Ibrox outfit are reportedly set to turn to the 26-year-old as a replacement for the outgoing Nigerian international, with the youngster set to join Ajax in what would be a club-record sale for the Gers.

Davies – who joined the Merseysiders on a £1.6m deal from Preston North End back in January 2021 – is yet to make a first-team appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side, having spent the most recent campaign on loan at Sheffield United.

Another report from the same source suggests that Vincent Kompany’s Burnley are also keen on the Englishman, while the player has also reportedly been a target for Old Firm foes Celtic over the last few years.

Bassey heir

Managing to secure the signing of the £2.25m-rated gem ahead of their bitter rivals would no doubt be a source of delight for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, while the player would also offer an ideal solution to the void left behind by the departing Bassey.

The latter man had been a colossal presence in the club’s run to the Europa League final last term, earning comparisons to Dutch giant Virgil van Dijk for his display in the showpiece in particular, while also starring in the Scottish Cup triumph over Hearts a few days later – leaving former Scotland boss Alex McLeish to dub him a “man mountain”.

Plucked from Leicester City for just £300k, the Italy-born brute has proven a remarkable piece of business for the Glasgow side, with the onus now on finding a suitable candidate to fill his shoes.

In Davies, sporting director Ross Wilson appears to have identified the perfect man to do just that, with the impressive ace seemingly most comfortable in a left centre-back role, although can also slot in at left-back, with that versatility much like that of Bassey.

While he hasn’t been afforded a sniff at Anfield, the £60k-per-week man did impress during his temporary stint at Bramall Lane last term, notably averaging 2.6 clearances, 1.5 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in his 22 Championship outings, winning an impressive 64% of his total duels and keeping seven clean sheets.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

The 6-foot-1 ace has also previously been lauded for his form during his spell at Deepdale, with chairman Peter Risdale hailing him as a “Rolls Royce” for his classy displays ahead of his move to the Reds.

It has proven a difficult 18 months since then under Klopp, although the end now appears to be in sight, with reports suggesting a departure is in the works having been left out of the club’s tour of Asia.

That should then open the door for Rangers to pounce, with a swift arrival set to soften the blow of the imminent Bassey farewell.
