Rangers eyeing move for Bulgarian goalkeeper

Glasgow Rangers are believed to have turned their attention towards a Bulgarian goalkeeper, according to the latest reports.

What’s the word?

As per Football Insider, the Ibrox outfit are believed to have registered an interest in signing Dimitar Mitov in the current transfer window, with the Premiership giants said to be ‘considering their options’ in the goalkeeping department.

The Light Blues currently have the veteran pair of Jon McLaughlin and Allan McGregor as their senior options between the sticks, with the latter having just one year remaining on his existing contract.

That is also the case for the aforementioned Mitov – who has spent the last five seasons with Cambridge – with that contract status potentially enabling Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst to secure a cut-price deal for the Bulgarian giant.

Van Bronckhorst can rid himself of McLaughlin

The 2022/23 season may only be in its infancy, yet the issue of who will be the Gers’ first-choice goalkeeper moving forward continues to spark debate, with Van Bronckhorst having thus far opted to start McLaughlin in the opening two matches of the campaign.

That decision seemingly backfired as the Scotland international was culpable of a goalkeeping error in the midweek Champions League qualifying defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise, with the 34-year-old failing to deal with a relatively routine effort on goal as the Belgian outfit took the lead and subsequently seized control of the tie.

The £6.1k-per-week dud redeemed himself somewhat with a crucial late save, but he was unsurprisingly criticised in the wake of that earlier error – notably from former Ibrox striker Kenny Miller – while some supporters have also pleaded for McGregor to be reinstated as the club’s regular ‘keeper.

That may be a wise move in the short term considering the 40-year-old’s quality – having been dubbed the club’s “best ever keeper” by Tam McManus – although in the long-term a younger addition may well be needed.

That is where Mitov comes in, with the 6 foot 2 titan having been in hugely impressive form of late at his current club, making 133 appearances for Cambridge since his move from Charlton Athletic in 2017.

The 25-year-old put himself firmly on the map after his colossal performance against Newcastle United in the FA Cup in January, making ten saves in a man-of-the-match display as the U’s ran out shock 1-0 winners at St James’ Park.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

That “phenomenal” outing, as described by journalist Ryan Taylor, saw the towering Bulgarian also record a mightily impressive 9.4 match rating from SofaScore, proving that he can thrive on the big occasion.

If that performance alone is anything to go by, then Rangers could well have their new long-term stopper if Mitov is lured north of the border before the September deadline, with such a move seemingly allowing Van Bronckhorst to rid himself of the struggling McLaughlin.
