A major Glasgow Rangers claim has emerged regarding James Tavernier's future at Ibrox...

What's the talk?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Light Blues captain will be putting pen to paper on a contract extension in the coming days.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2024 and the club have moved to ensure that they are not in a difficult position with him this time next year.

He tweeted: "Rangers have reached an agreement with James Tavernier to sign a new contract until June 2026, been told it’s now done and sealed. #RangersFC Official announcement expected in the next days, Tavernier stays."

Gio van Bronckhorst will be delighted

The Ibrox head coach will surely be delighted by this news, as securing the captain's future will be a huge boost for the Rangers squad.

Instead of being tempted to pursue a move elsewhere, like his former team-mates Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey, Tavernier has decided to commit himself to Glasgow.

He is a crucial player for Rangers and losing him would dampen their chances of achieving success.

Since joining the club in 2015, Tavernier has amassed 347 competitive appearances for the Gers and racked up 83 goals and 107 assists. That is a phenomenal return from a right-back and illustrates how impressive he has been for the Scottish giants over the years.

The 30-year-old has proven himself to be a top performer in the Premiership and in Europe. Last season, he averaged an astounding SofaScore rating of 7.77 in the Scottish top flight as he produced nine goals and an eye-catching 13 assists in 35 outings.

Meanwhile, he averaged a rating of 7.49 in the Europa League as he captained the team all the way to the final of the competition. He scored seven goals and provided two assists in 14 outings as he proved that he can be Rangers' star man domestically and in Europe.

Therefore, he is a player that Van Bronckhorst knows that he can rely upon over the course of a campaign. The ex-Newcastle man is a consistent, quality performer who has the ability to make a huge impact on games whilst playing at right-back.

This is why the Rangers boss will be delighted by Tavernier's contract extension, as it shows a willingness to stay at the club from the 30-year-old. Putting pen to paper on fresh terms does not suggest that he will be pushing for an exit any time soon, and the Light Blues look set to enjoy his talents for the foreseeable future.
