Rangers' hopes of signing Joey Veerman this summer have taken a blow, with the 22-year-old expressing his interest in signing for Feyenerood, which suggests that Steven Gerrard will have to act fast if he wants to bring him to Ibrox.

What's the word?

Veerman has been heavily linked with a move to the Scottish champions throughout the transfer window, with The Athletic's Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell confirming that he remains one of the top targets for the Gers this summer.

The 22-year-old has been a mainstay in Heerenveen's side for the last two seasons and has caught the eye with his performances, which have attracted the interest of a number of sides in the Eredivisie and across Europe.

Feyenoord, who could only muster a fifth-place finish in the Dutch top-flight last season, are the latest side to register their interest, with Veerman confirming that they have made an approach for him in a recent interview, as he said:

“My management have received some kind of offer [from Feyenoord]. I think they have asked Heerenveen how much they want for me.

“So in the end, I hear that they have not made an official offer with Heerenveen, but that they really want me.

“Yes, I would be a very happy man if I can go there. It could be a good step for me. I certainly think so."

Should Rangers be pushing for Veerman?

Although Veerman would represent a significant outlay for Rangers this summer, with reports claiming that Heerenveen want as much as £8m for the midfielder, his performances suggest that he could be a huge success at Ibrox.

Last season saw the youngster make 31 appearances in the Eredivisie, in which he contributed an impressive seven goals and 10 assists, averaging a superb 7.40 rating from WhoScored.

Only James Tavernier and Ryan Kent would average higher in Gerrard's squad last season, which suggests that if he were able to replicate those performances with Rangers, in a side which is expected to dominate their league rather than Heerenveen, then he would surely be a huge success at Ibrox.

Therefore, after this latest update on the man Roger Schmidt called a "very good" midfielder, Ross Wilson should submit an increased bid for Veerman in the hopes that Heerenveen accept and the Dutchman is convinced by a move to Ibrox before it's too late.
