Rangers: Glen Kamara’s future at Ibrox could spring a “twist”

Rangers could be in line to lose another key figure from Ibrox this summer, amid doubts over the future of midfielder, Glen Kamara.

What’s the word?

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – there could be a “late twist” regarding the midfielder as the window draws to a close, with the 26-year-old attracting interest from clubs across Europe.

The transfer insider stated: “I think there could still be a late twist. There’s been quite a few clubs interested in Glen Kamara from the Premier League and from abroad as well. So you can never rule out a possible move. We’ve still got plenty of time left in this transfer window as well and, I think for Rangers’ sake, if it’s an offer they can’t turn down they would have to maybe let Kamara move on.”

The former Dundee man – who arrived at Ibrox on a £50k deal back in January 2019 – still has three years remaining on his existing deal in Glasgow.

Another blow for GvB

Despite having welcomed seven new additions through the door so far this summer, it has proven a somewhat frustrating window thus far for manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, having seen a handful of key figures depart with others also tipped for an exit.

The Dutchman has already witnessed last season’s breakthrough star Calvin Bassey join Ajax for a club-record fee, while fellow Nigeria international Joe Aribo has made the move to Premier League side Southampton on a £10m deal.

While those two are the most notable departures as yet, there are still lingering concerns over the future of talisman Alfredo Morelos – who has 12 months left on his current contract – with Mexican outfit Cruz Azul reportedly showing an interest of late.

Equally, former Liverpool man Ryan Kent is also believed to be on the radar of former Gers boss Steven Gerrard, with the 42-year-old potentially keen to reunite with the winger at Aston Villa.

Add doubts over Kamara into that mix and it is teetering towards something of a disastrous window for the Old Firm giants, with the midfielder’s exit one blow that Van Bronckhorst simply can’t afford.

The 46-cap menace has been a real standout figure for the Scottish Premiership side over the past few seasons, having racked up 159 appearances in all competitions for the club thus, netting eight goals and providing ten assists in that time.

While previously dubbed a “monster” by Steven Gerrard, the £6.75m-rated man is perhaps more of a calming presence on the current side, notably showcasing his brilliance in possession last term after recording a 91% pass accuracy rate in the league, while also averaging 1.3 key passes per game.

A player with a creative touch who can thrive anywhere across the midfield, the £21k-per-week colossus is someone who will prove difficult to replace, particularly so late in the window, with Rangers unable to afford to lose yet another key cog from their midfield machine, following Aribo’s prior exit.

Should Kamara be snapped up by one of his multiple suitors, it would be another unwanted blow for Van Bronckhorst.
