Rangers can land Roofe upgrade with Scottish striker swoop

Rangers were struck down with an unfortunate blow last term when Alfredo Morelos suffered a season-ending thigh injury while away from Ibrox on international duty.

As a result, Giovanni van Bronckhorst had to turn to Kemar Roofe to help see out the campaign in the Colombian’s absence, before he then missed several matches through an injury of his own.

In 21 Premiership appearances, nine of which he started, the Jamaican scored 10 goals but didn’t manage to provide a single assist for his team.

Now that the season has ended and the summer transfer window is open, this could give Ross Wilson the chance to find a suitable upgrade on Roofe.

One player with whom the Gers have been linked previously and who could fit this particular bill is Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

Having started his career in Scotland and played for the likes of St Mirren and Ross County, the striker joined the Wearside outfit in January 2021. Since then, the 25-year-old has found the net 29 times in 65 games for the Black Cats, supplying five assists in the process.

How many signings did Rangers make in the last summer window?

Last season saw the Scotsman score 26 goals in 49 League One appearances including the play-offs, showing just how important he was in the Wearside club’s promotion to the Championship.

In fact, only three other players in the division racked up more shots on target than Stewart (56) throughout the campaign.

Would Ross Stewart be a better option for Rangers than Kemar Roofe?

In Roofe’s 45 Premiership games for Rangers over the past two seasons, the 29-year-old has had 92 shots at goal. In Stewart’s 46 regular-season league games in 2021/22, he had 130 in total. This shows just how much of a threat he is and why he could be a better option for the Light Blues than the Jamaican.

Praised by James McFadden in the past for his “exceptional” work rate, the Sunderland centre-forward could reportedly cost the Gers £5m this summer.

With all this in mind, while it would be safe to assume that the Black Cats would want to keep hold of their star striker to help them navigate their way through the Championship next season. However, Rangers should be doing all they can to bring him back to Scotland and try to help them regain the Premiership title.
