An update has emerged regarding Glasgow Rangers' chances of landing one of their targets in the summer transfer window...

What's the talk?

According to Football Insider, Manchester City have given clubs the green light to swoop in for attacking midfielder James McAtee on loan this season.

The report claims that Pep Guardiola is now prepared to allow the 19-year-old to leave on a temporary basis, with a host of clubs in England said to be keen on the player.

Gio van Bronckhorst reportedly tried to land the attacker on loan earlier this summer and now has the opportunity to bring him to Ibrox.

Scott Wright upgrade

Ross Wilson must now take advantage of McAtee's availability by snapping him up on loan in the coming weeks, as he has the potential to be a big upgrade on Scott Wright.

The Ibrox winger endured a difficult campaign last term as he failed to showcase his quality on a consistent basis, domestically or in Europe, as he struggled under Steven Gerrard and Van Bronckhorst.

In the Premiership, the 24-year-old chipped in with four goals and one assist in 19 outings. Meanwhile, he managed one goal and one assist in nine Europa League appearances, racking up seven direct goal contributions in 28 matches between the two competitions.

On the other hand, McAtee has shown that he has the potential to offer far more in the final third if he is able to make the step up to regular senior football.

The 19-year-old - who can play anywhere across the midfield - has been sensational for Manchester City at youth level in recent years. He produced 17 goals and eight assists in 35 outings for the under-18s and 19s combined before going on to register 27 goals and 19 assists in 52 appearances for the under-23s.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once claimed that McAtee has "electric" pace and is a "playmaker" on the ball, with his aforementioned statistics certainly backing up the latter.

At the age of 19, he is a player with the scope to develop and grow over the course of the campaign as he gains more experience, potentially playing week in, week out for the Light Blues.

If he is able to make a successful transition to playing first-team football, then his form at youth level suggests that he would be a better option than Wright out on the wing at Ibrox this season.
