An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their chances of bringing an attacking midfielder to Ibrox in the summer transfer window...

What's the talk?

According to The Athletic, Sheffield United are leading the race to land Gers target James McAtee on loan for the season.

Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton and Leicester City have all had enquiries rejected as they attempted to sign him on a permanent basis.

The Light Blues, along with Leeds and Nottingham Forest, have been named as interested parties this week and now look to be facing stiff competition from the Blades.

Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed that Paul Heckingbottom's team are poised to complete a move for the young magician this week.

Imagine him & Ryan Kent

Gers insider The 4th Official revealed that the club may look to sign another attacker before the end of the window, Tweeting:

"Rangers are still in the market for other signings as we could potentially see a creative attacking player joining next."

They later backed the Light Blues to swoop for him, saying: "Personal opinion: Rangers should try and get James McAtee on a season long loan. A ridiculously talented player and will instantly increase the creativity quotient of this side."

Therefore, Ross Wilson must do whatever it takes to usurp the Blades at the final hour - despite how close they are to a transfer - in order to bring the teenager to Ibrox in the coming weeks as he could form an exciting partnership with his fellow countryman Ryan Kent.

Gers fans, of course, already know what the former Liverpool winger is capable of in the Premiership. He kicked off the 2022/23 campaign in familiar style with an assist in a 2-1 win over Livingston, having managed two goals and eight assists in 26 appearances last season.

That came after he racked up a whopping ten goals and nine assists in the 2020/21 title-winning campaign, with these statistics showing how much of a threat he is to opposition defences.

He has the quality to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch by scoring and assisting goals and McAtee has the potential to replicate that at Ibrox.

The 19-year-old has been a standout for Manchester City's youth team over the years and has amassed an eye-catching 44 goals and 27 assists in 87 matches at various age groups, whilst he has also played six times for the first team.

McAtee has scored 27 goals and set up 16 in 46 Premier League 2 outings and this suggests that he has the potential to make the step up to first-team football, as he has been outstanding for the U23s.

If he can replicate a production level anywhere near what he has been managing at youth level then the gem will be a sublime player for Rangers, which is why signing him is a worthwhile gamble on loan.

Just imagine him and Kent, the two English attackers, causing havoc in the box with their ability to score and assist goals. It is an exciting prospect and that is why Wilson must beat off rival competition for his signature to bring him to Glasgow.
