An exciting Rangers transfer claim has been made regarding the potential of life after Connor Goldson at Ibrox…
Retired Scotland international Frank McAvennie has claimed that the Gers ‘can get’ a quality replacement for Connor Goldson due to the size of the club and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s name.
He told Football Insider: “Rangers are a massive club, if they do lose Goldson they can get a quality replacement in.
“That’s never in doubt. Van Bronckhorst is a name as well. As long as they stay top of the league, you can tell players and convince them because Rangers will definitely be in the Champions League group stage next year.
“That’s a great thing to offer and then you have the league title silverware as well. There is no reason Rangers can’t find another Goldson.”
Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with these quotes from McAvennie as they provide some reassurance that Goldson’s possible exit is not the end of the world. The club has the stature to attract a good standard of player to Ibrox, according to the 61-year-old, and that could lead to some exciting transfers next summer with Van Bronckhorst at the helm.
No player is bigger than the club and supporters might not be too gutted to see Goldson walk out the door if he is not committed to the Gers’ long-term future. If he is more interested in playing in the Premier League instead of competing for trophies and playing European football for Rangers, then he should be sent on his merry way and replaced either in January or next summer when his deal expires.
The Gers have been touted with an interest in John Souttar and he could be the type of player to whom McAvennie is referring. He has averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.44 in the Premiership for Hearts this season, compared to Goldson’s score of 7.13 for Van Bronckhorst’s side.
This suggests that Souttar could be a better centre-back than the Englishman for Rangers as he has performed consistently to a higher standard in the Premiership this term. Whilst it remains to be seen how viable this particular move may be, it illustrates the kind of deal that Rangers could pursue to replace Goldson, and why fans could be excited by the prospect of a top defender coming through the door.
