Glasgow Rangers have enjoyed a resurgent start to life with Michael Beale as the new manager at Ibrox, winning four matches and drawing just once – against their fierce rivals in the Old Firm clash last week.

The Englishman will be keen to add a couple of new signings to the squad in order to strengthen and also plan ahead for the future, especially with so many first-team players approaching the final few months of their current deals.

The Ibrox side have been linked recently with Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell and with Steven Davis one of the players out of contract at the end of the season, plus the fact he will now miss the rest of the campaign after injuring his knee, Beale could land his ideal heir to the Northern Irishman.

Perfect Davis heir

Cantwell is going through a difficult period in his career right now at Norwich, starting only nine matches in the Championship, but a fresh start could revive his career.

His performances during the 2019/2020 Premier League campaign were impressive and his talent looked like it would take him to the very top. He played 37 matches for the Canaries, scoring six top-flight goals and despite relegation back to the Championship, the 24-year-old continued to impress in 2020/2021, netting six goals and grabbing seven assists in 33 matches.

The last 18 months have proven extremely difficult, however, with the midfielder scoring just once in his previous 41 matches and Beale could give him the boost he needs to utilise his true potential.

Dean Ashton claimed he was “incredible” and it doesn’t get better than playing in Europe and in front of a packed Ibrox, so if he was to be approached, it could be an easy decision to make.

Davis is a club legend, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he will get the send-off he deserves due to injury. With a replacement needed, Cantwell fits the bill as an all-action midfielder who is arguably still to hit his peak yet.

With Beale’s fantastic coaching methods, plus an excellent group of players around him, the Norwich star, who has "god-given" talent - as per former youth coach Gary Cockaday - could burst out of this career malaise and thrive in Glasgow.
