Glasgow Rangers are closing in on a huge announcement over the future of Alfredo Morelos at the Premiership club...

What's the talk?

According to the Glasgow Times, the Light Blues are close to having a deal in place to keep the Colombian at the club beyond next summer.

His current contract expires in 2023 and talks are ongoing with the player's agents as Ross Wilson looks set to pin him down to fresh terms.

The article goes on to quote Gio van Bronckhorst as saying: "I am only looking at his physical fitness at the moment. He has been out for a long time but is working really hard to get back to the levels that he has to be to perform in games.

"Of course the other issue is the contract he has. He is very positive about signing a new contract, we are doing our best to get Morelos to sign a new contract as well.

"Hopefully in the next coming weeks we will sort it out but the talks are going."

Van Bronckhorst will be elated

The Ibrox head coach will be left feeling elated by this news, as it suggests that the attacker has decided to commit his future to the club.

Without signing a new deal, Rangers would be running the risk of losing Morelos on a pre-contract in January to foreign clubs or on a free transfer next summer. The prospect of getting nothing back in return for his services may have forced Wilson to consider cashing in on him in this summer in order to avoid a lack of compensation.

Instead, the striker is now set to put pen to paper on a fresh contract and could lead the line once again for the Light Blues next term.

The Colombia international is a proven performer for the club, with 113 goals in 224 appearances, and Van Bronckhorst will be buzzing that he appears likely to again have the 26-year-old as an option for the 2022/23 campaign.

Last season, Morelos caught the eye in the Premiership with 11 goals and seven assists for Rangers, whilst also finding the net four times in eight starts in the Europa League. These statistics show that he is a player capable of making a big impact in the final third.

He is a match-winner and Van Bronckhorst will now be looking forward to him winning many valuable points for the Light Blues in the upcoming season.
