An update has emerged on Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, regarding Porto's interest in the centre-forward.

What's the talk?

According to the Daily Record, Porto are showing an interest in signing Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos this summer and are considering an offer. Rangers are said to want a fee in the region of £20m for their centre-forward, who has been competing in the Copa America this month.

Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership defender claimed that Morelos is “deceptive”  in the way he uses his physical attributes, praising his strength and use of his body against defenders. He told The Athletic:

“When he goes to shield the ball it’s so difficult.

His body strength and ball control are very good, so he makes it very difficult for you. He is deceptive with his physical attributes, but what I’d say he’s best at is when the ball is played up to him. He lets you think that you can nip in front of him and then his timing to put his body in and spin you is excellent.”

Time to go

If Porto are willing to meet Rangers' £20m asking price for Morelos, Ross Wilson must ruthlessly axe him and allow him to leave.

Over the past three Scottish Premiership seasons, Morelos' goal tally has decreased per season. He managed 17 league goals in the 2018/19 campaign, following that up with 12 and then 11 in the subsequent campaigns.

This suggests that he is on a downward curve in front of goal and the time could be right for Rangers to cash in on him whilst clubs are still willing to potentially spend good money on him. If Rangers don't sell Morelos this summer and he fails to improve on last season's goal tally then it could negatively affect the club's chances of selling him for a big fee furher down the line.

The £33k-per-week forward, therefore, could leave at the perfect time this summer, especially given that Rangers are reportedly interested in signing Jonson Clarke-Harris from English side Peterborough.

Clarke-Harris scored 31 goals in League One for Peterborough, which suggests that he could be an excellent replacement for Morelos. He has shown that he can consistently score goals and Rangers could benefit from selling Colombian and bringing Clarke-Harris in, whilst the rest of the money could be used to improve other areas of the squad.
