Rangers are reportedly plotting a fresh Ibrox transfer swoop ahead of the upcoming window...

What's the talk?

According to The Scottish Sun, Gio van Bronckhorst's Gers are monitoring midfielder Eric Martel ahead of a summer swoop for the teenage prospect.

He has one year left on his contract with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and has been told that he will not be a part of their plans next season. A loan or permanent exit from the German outfit is on the cards for him and Rangers are looking to benefit from his availability, although they are joined by Freiburg, Cologne and Union Berlin in their interest.

Van Bronckhorst will be excited

Ibrox chief van Bronckhorst will surely be excited by this update, as the gem would be a promising young addition to his squad.

Martel has been capped three times by Germany at U21 level, which suggests that his country sees him as a player for the future. He has received international recognition after an impressive run of form playing in the top tier of Austrian football on loan at Austria Vienna.

The gem joined the Viennese club in January 2021 on an 18-month loan and has caught the eye with his performances. In the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, he averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.14 across 18 outings in the division as he made a whopping five tackles and interceptions per game.

This season, he has played 27 league matches and averaged a score of 7.01. He has made 5.1 tackles and interceptions per game and won 56% of his individual duels as he has been a defensive monster for the Austrian outfit.

Martel has been able to consistently win the ball back for his team whilst putting in strong all-round performances week in, week out. The 19-year-old has shown maturity beyond his years and that is why he would be an exciting signing for the Gers, as he has excelled at first-team level over the last 18 months despite his young age.

He is a player with whom Van Bronckhorst can work on the training pitch to develop over time, and the Dutchman will surely be buzzing to help the £1.8m-rated sensation fulfil his potential.

As shown by his form for Austria Vienna, Martel is a talented young player with potential to progress, and Ross Wilson must now strike a permanent deal for him this summer to bolster the squad heading into next season. The 19-year-old's statistics suggest that he could make an impact in the short-term, whilst his age means that he has the scope to be a big player in the long-term future for the club.
