Rangers will not be signing £4.7m “pitbull” this week

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their efforts to bring a new central midfielder to Ibrox in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

Belgian journalist Bob Faesen has claimed that the Light Blues will not be signing Nicolas Raskin from Standard Liege.

He Tweeted: “Nicolas Raskin will not move to Rangers FC this summer. At the moment, the midfielder seems to be staying in Liège.”

This comes after The 4th Official reported that the club were in talks with the Pro League outfit over a deal to sign the player who has been valued at €5.5m (£4.7m).

Big blow for Gio van Bronckhorst

This news will come as a big blow for the Dutch head coach as the deadline is on Thursday and the club will now have to find an alternative to Raskin in the final days of the window, which could leave them scrambling.

Is this a big blow for Rangers?

The Gers going as far as to hold talks with Liege over a potential transfer suggests that the 21-year-old is a player the manager would like to have in his squad.

He has seemingly identified the midfield as an area that needs to be strengthened and they will now have to address that without signing the youngster.

Failing to get a deal over the line for the Belgian gem is also a blow because he is a talented young player who had the potential to be a superb signing.

Faesen warned the Gers of Raskin’s talents back in 2020 as the two sides clashed in Europe, saying: “He is still only 19, but he has really shone. He is a box-to-box midfielder. He can play in every position in the middle of the park. He is technically gifted, but he is also a bit of a pitbull.

“He can run a lot, is powerful and has a good shot. He has been one of the big surprises in Belgium football this season and will be a key player for Liege who Rangers will need to be wary of.”

These comments suggest that he would have been a quality and versatile option for the Light Blues and that is backed up by his statistics this season. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.00 in the Pro League this term, making 2.5 tackles and interceptions and 1.3 key passes per game.

Meanwhile, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield, and Glen Kamara have all averaged lower SofaScore ratings in the Premiership for Rangers.

No central midfielder for the Gers has averaged more than 2.0 tackles and interceptions per match and Tom Lawrence (1.8) is the only player in that position with more than Raskin’s 1.3 key passes per outing.

This suggests that the Liege talent, who is younger than all of the club’s current options in midfield, would have added extra bite and creativity to the squad. As a result, failing to bring him in is a big blow for van Bronckhorst.
