Rangers: Van Bronckhorst now eyeing winger swoop at Ibrox

Rangers have recently been linked with a move for a new winger as Giovanni van Bronckhorst aims to bolster his ranks at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

Reports from Belgium suggest that Theo Bongonda is keen for a move away this summer and is currently training by himself at KRC Genk as he looks to find a new club.

The report claims that Rangers are willing to pay between €6-8m (£5m-£7m) for the winger this summer as they look to boost their attacking options, and feel that the Jupiler Pro League could be a good place to find new talent, having signed the likes of Ianis Hagi, Kemar Roofe and Fashion Sakala from there in the past.

Supporters will be buzzing

Given the lack of transfer action at Ibrox so far this summer, supporters and Van Bronckhorst himself will no doubt be delighted to hear that the club are keen on Bongonda.

Only John Souttar has arrived so far, after he agreed a deal in January, although Antonio Colak looks likely to arrive in the coming days after Rangers agreed a deal with PAOK for the Croatian striker.

Should Rangers sign Bongonda?

Bongonda was in impressive form for Genk last season, contributing 13 goals and five assists in 43 appearances for the Belgian side, despite a mid-table finish.

The winger clearly has an eye for goal, with WhoScored suggesting that his main strengths include his finishing and long shot ability, while he also likes to cut inside from the left, in a similar style to Ryan Kent.

In 2021, Bongonda lined up in a potent attack alongside Paul Onuachu and Junya Ito, which earned a lot of praise from former Anderlecht coach John van den Brom, who said:

“I have often had good strikers as a coach, but never had a full line. I like playing with wingers, but with as much performance as these three, it’s weird. So it’s not just the best attack in Belgium, I think. I think it’s even, when it comes to efficiency, the best attack in the world.”

This certainly bodes well for Rangers and if he does arrive at Ibrox, he could no doubt form an excellent partnership with the likes of Kent and Alfredo Morelos in van Bronckhorst’s side, so Ross Wilson should seriously consider signing him this summer.

And, in other news… David Ornstein drops big transfer update that’ll have Rangers supporters gutted
