An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their plans to bolster their squad during the current January transfer window...

What's the talk?

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, the Light Blues have sent scouts to watch English central defender Dion Sanderson in action this season.

The report claims that sporting director Ross Wilson went to watch him play for Birmingham last week and that the youngster would be available at an affordable price to the club, although it remains to be seen exactly how much that is.

He is currently on loan at St. Andrew's from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers and it is stated that the Championship side want to sign him permanently and will rival Rangers to land his signature.

Connor Goldson's heir

Wilson could land the long-term heir to Goldson's position in the team by beating off competition from Birmingham to sign Sanderson this month.

The current Gers centre-back turned 30 last month and Beale may be starting to think about what life will look like after the former Brighton man, who has started 12 matches in the Premiership this season, either departs or regresses due to age.

Sanderson is an up-and-coming 23-year-old enforcer who could be a long-term addition to the squad, with a view to him replacing Goldson as the main starter in that position in the future.

Former Sunderland boss Lee Johnson once hailed the 6 foot 2 central defender during his time on loan at the Stadium of Light, saying: "He's a centre-half and at his age level he is an absolute Rolls-Royce."

He has showcased his potential in the Championship this season by averaging a Sofascore rating of 6.92 for the Blues across 24 appearances.

The gem has made 3.1 tackles and interceptions per match and won 55% of his individual duels, compared to Goldson's 2.8 tackles and interceptions per outing and 66% duel success in the Premiership, and this shows that he has consistently won possession back for his side whilst delivering quality performances week-in-week-out.

Whilst he may not be as efficient as the Gers colossus in his battles, Sanderson has room to grow at the age of 23 and is a player who could benefit from training alongside the likes of Goldson and Ben Davies, whilst working with Beale to develop as a centre-back.

Therefore, he could be an excellent long-term signing for Rangers by arriving as the dream long-term heir to Goldson's throne at the heart of the defence at Ibrox.
