A major update has emerged on Rangers' pursuit of a new addition to their squad ahead of the January transfer window...

What's the talk?

According to Spanish outlet AS, via Glasgow Times, the Gers are leading the race to land teenage midfielder Xavi Simons from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

The report claims that the club have already been in contact with his agent Mino Raiola, and Gio van Bronckhorst is said to be actively pursuing a deal.

Excited

Rangers fans will surely be excited by this transfer update as it suggests that the club are serious about sealing a swoop for the talented youngster.

He is out of contract in 2022 and they could sign him on a pre-contract in January if he does not sign an extension with the French giants. This means that the Gers would need to wait until the end of the campaign to see him in action at Ibrox, unless they offer PSG a cut-price fee to snap him up six months earlier.

Simons has already made his Ligue 1 debut and made three senior appearances in total for Mauricio Pochettino's side, showing that they believe he has the quality to play at the top level despite his age.

The Dutch youth international has excelled in the youth ranks for PSG. He has scored five goals and provided six assists in 12 appearances for their under-19 team as an attacking midfielder, highlighting his ability to score and create goals from the number 10 position.

At the age of 18, he could be a phenomenal signing for the future. He has almost his entire career ahead of him and that means that Rangers could be the place where he develops his game and improves over time, which could lead to them being able to sell him on for major profit further down the line.

This is why fans will be excited about the potential of him arriving in Glasgow in 2022. The youngster has time on his side to turn into a top player and his recent form for PSG's youth team suggests that he could make an impact at first-team level.

Pochettino has deemed him worthy of senior minutes in a squad with the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in it and van Bronckhorst may look to give him opportunities to shine in the Premiership if they are able to land him.
