Rangers told to pay £4m to land English marksman in January

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their pursuit of a new striker ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, the Light Blues have been told that it will cost them £4m to sign Blackpool centre-forward Jerry Yates at the start of 2023.

The report claims that the Scottish giants have sent scouts to watch the attacker in action as they eye up a potential swoop for him in January.

It is stated that Blackpool are aware of interest from Rangers and teams from the Premier League and that they believe his valuation, which currently stands at £4m, will increase if he continues to score goals between now and the next window.

Roofe replacement

Signing Yates could allow Gers sporting director Ross Wilson to finally ditch Kemar Roofe, as the former Leeds United forward has struggled with injuries in recent years.

The attacker missed 14 games through injury in his debut campaign at the club in 2020/21 and followed that up by sitting out of another 14 matches in 2021/22.

He also suffered an injury that kept him out between May and October of this year and that forced him to watch on from the sidelines for 22 competitive outings.

What nationality does Mateusz Zukowski represent?

This means that he has been injured for 50 games in just over two seasons with the club, which suggests that he is a liability in terms of his availability.

He is not a player who Giovanni van Bronckhorst can rely upon to be available week-in-week-out and that is why Wilson could improve the Rangers squad by bringing in Yates and ditching Roofe.

The Blackpool striker has played 16 times in the English Championship this season – after playing 39 in 2021/22 – and has chipped in with eight goals and two assists, whilst creating six big chances for his teammates.

No

Journalist Alec Whitaker recently dubbed him a “man in form” and his statistics back that up as he has scored a goal every other game in the league so far this term.

At the age of 25, he is also four years younger than Roofe and could have more long-term value to the club. He is a player who Van Bronckhorst could work with over the course of a number of years, improving him on the training ground, whereas the current Rangers man is an experienced player in the latter stages of his career.

Therefore, Wilson could finally ditch the £26k-per-week Gers attacker by securing a deal to sign Yates in the upcoming January transfer window, as he could be more reliable in terms of his availability and has more long-term potential.
