The 15 British Players To Have Broken The British Transfer Record Over The Last 40 Years
In February 1979 Trevor Francis made the move from Birmingham City to Nottingham Forest and in doing so became the first player in British transfer history to break the £1million barrier.
Since then, that record has been broken 23 times, 15 of which have been by British players.
There was a steady increase in the price of players for the decade which followed Francis’ move, but the introduction of the Premier League re-wrote the rules on transfer fees.
In recent times we have seen crazy money being thrown about which has resulted in the current record, set back in 2018, break the £100m mark when Philippe Coutinho moved from Liverpool to Barcelona for a simply staggering £105m.
But this gallery will just look at the British players who have become the most expensive player in the British Isles, but where will Harry Maguire end up on this list?
And we start 40 years ago with a certain Steve Daley…
Steve Daley got the ball rolling following Francis’ barrier-breaking transfer fee by moving from Wolves to Man City just seven months later for £1.45m. However, he struggled at Maine Road, was ridiculed by fans, and left after just two years.
