Over the last couple of years have been quite something for Reading in the transfer market. Before 2019/20, their record holder was actually Sone Aluko who was transferred from Fulham in 2017/18 for a reported sum of £6.7m, beating the old top-dog, Greg Halford, who was on top of the mountain since 2006/07 when Reading bought him from Colchester for £4m.
But then 2019/20 arrived and the signing of George Puscas for a reported sum of £7.2m took the top spot from Aluko and is still the most expensive arrival at the club to date. But that year they also bought Lucas Joao from Sheffield Wednesday for £4.8m and the forward is now their third most expensive signing ever.
As far as departures are concerned, Kevin Doyle’s £6.8m move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2009/10 is still the club’s biggest sale to date, closely followed by Dave Kitson’s £6.3m transfer to Stoke City a year prior to that.
Aaron Tshibola rounds up the top three with his departure to Aston Villa for £5.3m in 2016/17, which is the closest they’ve come to breaking the record in recent times.
Some of the biggest transfers in Reading’s history include players of the years gone by. If we are talking about players who ended up becoming icons of the club, we have to mention Marcus Stephen Hahnemann, the goalie who was a part of the team from 2002 and 2009.
Apart from him, names like Graeme Murty, who was active in roughly the same period, Michael Duberry, whose short stint was still quite successful, and Ian Harte definitely get a shout. And talking about short stints, Robin Friday didn’t really spend that long at Reading but he was still one of the most stylish players to don their colours and his flair is something the fans will probably not forget any time soon.
Among others, the transfers of Bobby Convey and Shane Long also ended up being quite successful for the club as both players left a mark during their stints as one of the Royals. But in recent years, Puscas certainly has to get a shout since he is the record-breaker at Reading and Joao and Aluko get a mention for a similar reason as well.
