Barry Bannan backs Carlos Carvalhal as a contender for Celtic job

A report in the Scottish Sun earlier this week stated that former Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal would be interested in the Celtic job if it was available this summer, and he has been backed up in another Scottish Sun article by a player that worked under him at Hillsborough – Barry Bannan.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Scottish Premiership champions are yet to decide whether caretaker manager Neil Lennon is going to take the role on a permanent basis.

An unbeaten run and a title success looked to have left him in a good position, but the first defeat of his second spell in charge at Parkhead – a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday – may well have dented his chances.

The Scottish Sun report that Carvalhal would be interested in taking charge, and he has been backed up by Bannan.

The 29-year-old told a separate Scottish Sun report:

“As a manager, he’s different class.

“He’s a great guy, very intelligent too and he knows football inside out.”

Is Bannan right?

While those are certainly some impressive words from the 27-cap Scotland international, who clearly knows all about the situation north of the border despite his ties in the English leagues, he isn’t right.

Carvalhal may well be on the list of candidates should Celtic choose to go in a new direction at the end of the season, but he wouldn’t be very high up on it and wouldn’t be one of the strong contenders.

Controversial. Uncompromising. Leader. C’mon the Hoops’ Keith talks the future of Celtic’s evergreen captain Scott Brown in the video below…

The 53-year-old hasn’t shown enough with Wednesday and Swansea in British football to prove that he is a big enough name to go in at Celtic Park and shake things up, and that is something that could be needed given Rangers are ever-improving.

It would certainly be more than a surprise if the Portuguese is handed the job by Peter Lawwell and Co.
