Former Kilmarnock defender Alex Bruce - son of Steve Bruce - has spoken to Football Insider about COVID-19 and how the Scottish Premiership should handle the awarding of titles if the division is cut short due to the virus.

Coronavirus risks seeing Scotland's top-flight come to an abrupt end as Nicola Sturgeon advised against holding gatherings of more than 500 people from Monday onwards, which obviously sees football matches and spectators become embroiled in that.

Speaking on Thursday, Celtic star Scott Brown said that he felt the Hoops should still be awarded the title even if the league is cut short due to COVID-19 - it is difficult to argue with him seeing as Neil Lennon's side are 13 points clear of Rangers.

On that note, Bruce also agreed.

What did he say?

Bruce told Football Insider: "They’ve been the best team by a mile, I don’t think any teams have come close to them.

"Rangers for a large part of the season, but we all know the troubles they’ve had in the last couple of months. Listen, for me it would be a real kick in the teeth if people aren’t given titles. I think it’s ridiculous."

Difficult situation for the SPFL

While, as aforesaid, we agree that Celtic should be handed the title given how far ahead of Rangers they are, where does that leave those in the lower regions of the table?

For example, Hearts are bottom on 23 points, just four points off Hamilton and six off Ross County in tenth, so it is all very much still to play for down there with eight games left of the season.

So, this makes the whole situation a very difficult one for the SPFL in terms of deciding these sides' fate.

Deciding who wins the title is the easy part, but if the SPFL relegated Hearts on the same basis even though they still have a lifeline, one can only imagine how badly that would go down with their supporters.
