Chris Sutton has had his say on his former side’s Champions League exit to CFR Cluj, and the Celtic fans couldn’t agree more.
The former Celt has pulled no punches in lambasting Neil Lennon and his side for their embarrassing 5-4 aggregate defeat to Cluj in the third round of the Champions League qualifiers.
The pundit believes that the Bhoys made six mistakes on the night that lead to their exit.
Goals from Ryan Christie, Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest weren’t enough at Parkhead on Tuesday, as the Romanians progressed to the play-off round thanks to some shoddy Hoops defending, with Celtic dropping to the same stage in the Europa League.
Sutton’s comments have gone down well with the irate fans, who are furious at their side for the defeat and the way the club has been run in recent times.
One name that comes up repeatedly in their replies to Sutton is Peter Lawwell, the chief executive of the club. Many feel that after such a crushing defeat he has to take responsibility and leave, while most are just shaming the board in general, who they blame for picking Lennon as manager.
Here’s what they had to say about Sutton’s article and their club on Twitter:
Lennon and lawell need to go its as simple as that , holding us back its embarrassing

We’ve had high profile managers and he couldn’t get us into champions league. We’ve been beat by Maribor, legia warsaw, malmo, Athens and now Cluj in the past 6 years. No surprise we got beat on Tuesday, we’re standing still as a club.

Team in decline, manager who walked away, was an abject failure in England and we take him back because he is ‘Celtic minded’ what a croc of nonsense…….board are at fault for failed strategy & Lennon for result on Tuesday because of his shambolic team selection!

A Celtic manager should be chosen by interview, not by an old pals’ act & sticking the other applications unread in a drawer (and boasting about it). This is not a “welfare to work” scheme and frankly Lennon was unwanted by any club

Sack Lawwell, the common denominator of our failures.

Board gambled last 2 seasons and lost – consequences??? Lennon – never should have had Calmac at LB. John Kennedy – why wasn’t he telling Lennon Calmac at LB wouldn’t work. Scott Brown – too old for the big games. £10m on bench. I could go on but that’s my opinion!!

I blame the board for picking Lennon and Lennon for picking the team. Simples

Spot on @chris_sutton73, the board need to back the Manager with better signings, accomplished players who have a good track record, they might cost that bit more but Celtic need the experience these players can give.
