Celtic react to Harston’s verdict on defeat to Valencia

Most Celtic fans were in agreement with John Hartson’s glass half full assessment of Celtic’s performance against Valencia.

On the surface a 1-0 defeat in a 3-0 aggregate is nothing to write home about but after a tame display in the first leg Celtic showed signs that they can match and compete with the sort of side that does well in the Europa League.

Spanish sides have a virtual monopoly of European tournaments but until Jeremy Toljan was harshly sent off it was the visitors that were the better side in the Mestalla.

Valencia knew that they didn’t need to win the game but Brendan Rodgers sent out a side to attack and test their opponents rather than park the bus in a face saving exercise.

It was a side of Celtic that has rarely been seen in Europe this season – at home to RB Leipzig was the only performance that reached the same heights.

By signing off on a high, expectations for next season have been raised but there are domestic tests and another transfer window to be faced before the next batch of UEFA qualifiers.
