Celtic fans joined other supporters from across football today in paying tribute to Rangers’ fallen star Fernando Ricksen, in a wonderful show of supporter solidarity following on the heels of the outstanding cross-football response to the abuse Scott Brown endured earlier in the month.

Fernando Ricksen today lost his awful battle with Motor Neurone Disease, a ghastly killer for which there is still no cure.

For the last couple of years, his struggle has inspired and touched people from all across football.

His death is a tragedy for his family and friends, but also asks question to the game itself, and Celtic fans were amongst those who paid their tributes to him.

The club itself offered ts condolences this morning, and fans joined in.

These events bring Scottish football together, they remind fans that it is, after all, just a game, and one that cuts across all boundaries and social strata.

Rivalries on the pitch are just that. Life is too short for bitterness, and for this young man it was way too short.

Rest in Peace Fernando.
