A number of Celtic fans have been on social media hailing Stiliyan Petrov, who turned out for the Scottish giants between 1999 and 2006.

Indeed, it was Petrov's 40th birthday on Friday and Celtic's official Twitter account was on hand with a special message for the Bulgarian, which led to a host of the Scottish outfit's fans offering words of praise.

The former midfielder turned out on 99 occasions for the Hoops in all competitions - scoring 18 times and contributing 18 assists in the process.

The former CSKA Sofia youngster won four Scottish Premier League titles during his time with the club, in addition to three Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups during a successful period.

Petrov later went on to represent Aston Villa - making 219 appearances for the English giants before retiring in 2013.

A 105-time Bulgaria international, Petrov certainly enjoyed a successful career and has now been fondly remembered by the Celtic fans on social media.
