Celtic make enquiry for EURO 2016 defender

Celtic have made an enquiry about the availability of Blackburn Rovers defender Shane Duffy, according to the Daily Mail.

Despite being sent off in the last 16 match against France at the European Championship, the 24-year-old impressed during the Republic of Ireland’s campaign, and was a key player in his side’s 1-0 victory over Italy in the third group game of the tournament as they secured qualification to the knock-out rounds.

Duffy has been at Blackburn since 2014 after joining from Everton and has become a regular at Ewood Park, playing 42 times in all competitions last season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in the process.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to recruit a centre half with Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata both out injured.

He has already stopped Efe Ambrose from joining Nigeria’s squad for the Rio Olympic Games due to the lack of numbers at the back, and with Charlie Mulgrew also unavailable due to his contract dispute, the Northern Irishman has only Ambrose and Erik Sviatchenko as his only two fit centre-halves.
