Celtic must sign 6ft 8in target man Lacina Traore to bolster attacking options

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers should sign free-agent and ex-Everton striker Lacina Traore to bolster his attacking options for the multiple fronts that the Bhoys will be competing on this season.

What’s the story?

Having sold star striker Moussa Dembele to Lyon for £19.7m on deadline day, Rodgers is now left with just Leigh Griffiths and younsgters Odsonne Edouard and Michael Johnston as his options up front.

Dembele will be extremely difficult for the Northern Irish boss to replace, after the 22-year-old netted 51 times in 94 appearances for the Parkhead side since joining from Fulham in the summer of 2016.

Fellow Frenchman Edouard spent last season on loan with the Bhoys from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and his 11 goals and four assists clearly convinced Rodgers and the Celtic board to open their chequebooks to bring the 20-year-old in on a permanent basis.

Different options

Bringing in Traore though would provide Celtic with a completely different option and would allow them to play with a traditional target man when necessary thanks to his huge 6ft 8in frame. The 28-year-old is currently without a club having left Monaco in the summer following a four year stint in the principality.

However, he only managed 35 games and 11 goals for Monaco as he was shipped out on loan four times, the first of which was to Everton for the second half of the 2013/14 season. Traore does have an impressive goalscoring record throughout his career for a striker who’s job is often to hold the ball up and bring others into a game.

He is also a full international for Ivory Coast and won the African Cup of Nations in 2015. A striker with this sort of experience would be ideal for Rodgers now and would be the perfect option for his squad.
