According to a report by The Scottish Sun, Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham is a £14m target for FC Porto this month, and the Portuguese giants may even use former Bhoys target Chancel Mbemba as a makeweight in any potential deal.
Well, The Scottish Sun reports that Porto manager Sergio Conceicao is a huge admirer of the Frenchman and wants to bring him to the Estadio do Dragao having failed to during the summer transfer window.
The Scottish Sun reports that the Champions League outfit are willing to let Mbemba, who Brendan Rodgers expressed an interest prior to him leaving Newcastle United for Portugal in July, as the Congolese centre-back has fallen out of favour under his 44-year-old boss.
The report adds that Porto aren’t willing to take no for an answer in their surprise New Year move for the 22-year-old who only signed a new long-term contract to stay at Celtic in November.
If the offer is right and as reported, he should accept.
Whether it is £14m outright for just Mbemba or a reduced fee that includes the former Toon Army man, it is certainly a deal worth doing.
The Northern Irishman would kill two birds with one stone in the process as he needs a centre-back with Dedryck Boyata looking likely to leave Parkhead when his contract expires at the end of the campaign, while loanee Filip Benkovic will surely also return to parent club Leicester City.
Meanwhile, despite some impressive performances in the past Ntcham hasn’t looked the same player this term – and certainly since friend Moussa Dembele leftin August –and the Scottish Premiership leaders have largely looked better when he and Scott Brown haven’t been in the team.
Despite the fact he is only 22 years of age cashing in now might well be the right decision if he will fail to meet his potential and if his heart simply isn’t in it, although Celtic would need to use some of the funds to sign a replacement.
