The Athletic’s Celtic journalist Kieran Devlin has delivered a brutal verdict on defender Jozo Simunovic on Twitter after the club crashed out of the Europa League earlier this week.

What’s he said?

The Scottish giants lost 3-1 to Danish side FC Copenhagen on Thursday evening in the Round of 32 clash.

They had drawn the first leg 1-1 and goals from Michael Santos, Pep Biel, and Dame N’Doye sent the Danish club into the Round of 16.

Simunovic was directly culpable for the visitors’ first goal, failing to play a back-pass to Fraser Forster and allowing Santos to snatch possession and ultimately score.

Per WhoScored, he received a rating of 6.4 for his display and Devlin was particularly harsh with his criticism.

Thus far this season, Simunovic has played just six times in the top-flight of Scottish football.

Injury-plagued

Injuries have obviously hindered the Croatia international thus far this season.

Simunovic missed the first 21 games of the season and his six games in the team in the Scottish Premiership have come about in recent weeks.

He was, though, left out of the squad for games against Hamilton Academical and Aberdeen and one has to believe that those are more instructive of the level he is currently at.

He was repeatedly out of position against Copenhagen and his mistake directly led to their elimination from European competition.

Lennon needs to keep leaving him out.
