Neil Lennon will enquire about the availability of Southampton stopper and former Celt Fraser Forster, according to The Scottish Sun.

What's the story?

Scott Bain could be out for as long as two months after sustaining a thumb injury, and Lennon has wasted little time in searching for a replacement. With Craig Gordon coming back from injury and youngster Conor Hazard untested, the club are expected to move quickly if they feel Bain's injury is serious.

Lennon was the manager that brought Forster on loan to Parkhead back in 2010, before signing him permanently in 2012. The giant keeper enjoyed a fruitful spell at the Celts, winning three league titles and two Scottish Cups in his four years in Glasgow.

Despite starting well at Southampton after his move from Celtic Park, the six-time England international has fallen behind Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn in the Saints pecking order, making a deal more likely.

Timely return

Bain and Gordon have filled the Celtic fans with doubt thanks to some shaky displays of late, so the arrival of a former fan favourite would likely go down well with the supporters.

The two keepers don't look capable of playing for a club with realistic ambitions of making the Champions League group stages more often than not. So, the interest in Forster is timely as the club can still secure qualification to the Europa League, which is not a bad consolation prize.

The Celts need an able stopper and Forster has shown, through the majority of his career, to be just that. Barring the last 18 months, the keeper has been a fixture at both Southampton and Celtic, which is no mean feat when you consider the successes of the two clubs with him between the posts.

While the cliche 'never go back' is a concern here, a Premiership comeback wouldn't be unprecedented. Forster can look to Allan McGregor's successful return to Rangers as an example of a once-great 'keeper returning to their former club after an up-and-down spell down South and doing well.

A return to Parkhead could be perfect for all involved, the Saints get an unneeded player off the wage bill, Celtic get a top-class keeper and Forster will finally get to play again after 18 months of watching on as a reserve.
