According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic are keen on a move for Olympiakos’ Omar Elabdellaoui as Brendan Rodgers hunts for a replacement for the waning Mikael Lustig – the signing could be just what one Hoops fringe player needs to get into the first team picture.
Well, The Scottish Sun reports that Norwegian international Elabdellaoui has emerged as a target for the Parkhead outfit after the price set on number one option Timothy Castagne’s head by Atalanta was deemed to be too steep – the Belgian was valued at £10m by the Italian club.
Elabdellaoui came through the ranks at Premier League champions, Manchester City, but failed to break through to the first-team and was subsequently set out on loan to various European clubs. Now plying his trade in Greece, the well-rounded 27-year-old could be available for just £4m.
Having focused all of his attention on bolstering the forward line at Celtic Park in the first week of the transfer window, Rodgers seems to be looking to shore up his defence next and getting Elabdellaoui on the books could go a long way in doing so.
First and foremost, the Oslo-born defender would undoubtedly be a huge upgrade on Lustig, who has recently been linked with a move back to his native Sweden and, at 32, is well into his twilight years.
The 5-foot-10 fullback has been in sensational form for the Red-Whites this season as he chalks up an impressive two goals and four assists in 12 league games and has experience playing in the Europa League, where he completes a solid 3.3 tackles per game.
However, what Rodgers may not be counting on the number 14 bringing is the best out of Kristoffer Ajer; the centre-back is a national team-mate of Elabdellaoui’s but the Celtic boss doesn’t seem to rate him.
Playing alongside a familiar face regularly could mean that whipping boy Ajer is able to cement a spot in the starting XI and having an assured, young and capable central-defender will be crucial once loanee Filip Benkovic returns to Leicester.
