Celtic are weighing up a £6m bid for Lech Poznan's Robert Gumny to solve their problem at right-back, according to The Scottish Daily Mail (13/08, page 80).

What's the story?

The Polish right-back is expected to leave Lech Poznan before the end of the window, and the Bhoys could be about to pounce.

The right-hand side of defence has been an area of the park that Neil Lennon has tried to strengthen all summer, and Gumny looks to be the latest target, per the report.

Having seen Mikael Lustig, Jeremy Toljan and Cristian Gamboa depart the club this summer, Lennon has brought in Hatem Abd Elhamed to ease his worries in the role.

Despite his arrival, centre-back Kristoffer Ajer has filled in at right-back, and the Celts boss has made no secret of his desire to sign another before the window closes on September 2nd, presumably shifting Ajer back into his natural role in the middle.

An astute signing

At a reported £6m, Gumny wouldn't come cheap, but that shouldn't be as pertinent an issue as it has been in the past.

With Kieran Tierney leaving for £25m, the club have the money and the fans will surely expect a good chunk of it to be spent before the beginning of September, especially in defence.

Right-back is an area of the squad that clearly needs money spent on improvements too. Elhamed and Ajer's encouraging displays so far are a good sign but sticking with the Norwegian as the back-up long-term would be a waste of his talents and spread the already beleaguered defence thin.

Gumny also fits the model of many of Celtic's recent recruits. At 21, there's time for him to develop into a player worth a lot more than £6m and be sold on for a good profit. If he were to sign, then he can look to Tierney as the benchmark, as someone who succeeded at Parkhead and earned a lucrative move to the Premier League as a result.

For all the scrambling about trying to find the correct player to slot in on the right side of defence, the Bhoys may just have landed on the perfect candidate with Gumny.
