Despite sitting at the top of the table and being in the final of the Betfred Cup in recent weeks it seems that honest mistakes are on the up and up.

They don't much more obvious that when Steven McLean, Alan Muir and Frank Connor all failed to notice Josh Meekings punch away a Leigh Griffiths header during the Inverness Caley Thistle v Celtic Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden last year.

It seems that there is a growing feeling that 'well they are going to win anyway' around in the game that means the Hoops should just settle for honest mistakes with a shrug of the shoulders.

Brendan Rodgers has been a measure of diplomacy as he has watched some eye watering decisions go against his side on a weekly basis.

The Hoops boss has kept his powder dry but many Celtic fans would argue that after winning is perfect time to highlight erratic decisions.

It's not just Celtic that are effected by these decisions, at the weekend Mark McGhee and Jim McIntyre were both left puzzled/frustrated/angered by decisions made in their matches.

With a vow of silence and a few media mouthpieces telling us that 'these things even out over a season' to justify incompetence it seems that the current crop of referees will be blighting our enjoyment of the game for years to come.

Here are five examples...

Early in the second half of the League Cup semi-final at Hampden, Celtic are building up some momentum as they push towards their own fans.

Scott Sinclair sends in a cross from the left, Erik Sviatchenko positions himself perfectly, glances it with his forehead and it slips into the net with Matt Gilks in the Rangers goal unable to get close.

Meanwhile Clink Hill had tripped himself up and fell to the ground in his desperation to get a rugby tackle in on Sviatchenko.

Craig Thomson awards a free kick against Sviatchenko for an incident that no one else has identified.

Remarkably, Celtic were only leading by a single goal as the match reached the closing stages.

Neither physio had been on the pitch for any length of time but with Aberdeen finding an energy that had evaded them during the previous 80 minutes, Steven McLean discovered five minutes of stoppage time - that became six as the Dons piled high balls into the Celtic box.

After handing Erik Sviatchenko a first minute booking a number of Aberdeen players escaped punishment for similar fouls before McLean discovered his yellow card

Scott Brown deservedly picked up a yellow card for booting the ball from close range at an Aberdeen player that had been fouled by Mikael Lustig - what happened next had to be seen to be believed.

Pint sized Johnny Hayes races to the scene and pushes Brown over as the Hoops skipper is taken from the scene by McLean. For good measure, Adam Rooney takes a quick kick at Brown as he tries to get up from the ground. Hayes, Brown and Lustig are all booked.

With Celtic leading 1-0, Jamie Walker tumbles theatrically in the penalty box well away from the nearest Celtic defender, Kieran Tierney.

Referee John Beaton had a clear view of the 'incident' and sprinted towards the penalty spot without even a glance over to his assistant.

Walker scores from the penalty spot, celebrates at the Celtic supporters then picks up a retrospective two match ban, which is of no use to Celtic.

DUNDEE V CELTIC

Racing to gain control of a loose ball from a Celtic corner, Erik Sviatchenko suddenly felt Cammy Kerr sending him to the ground.

Andrew Dallas had a great view of the incident, as did his assistant, but no foul was awarded with Dundee relieved to play on.

As Steven Craigan defended the decision at half-time on BT Sport, Chris Sutton turned to the Motherwell coach and said 'You're an embarrassment'.
