According to the Daily Record, Mikael Lustig is preparing for talks with Celtic in the coming weeks to resolve his present contract situation.

The 6ft 2in tall defender’s current deal with the Hoops is set to expire at the end of this season, though, the reigning Scottish champions have an option to extend the 31-year-old’s contract by another 12 months.

As per the aforementioned report, the 73-cap Sweden international stated that:

“I have always said that I love this club and I love Glasgow.

"I am 100 per cent sure that I am going to move back to Sweden one day, so we’ll see when it is going to happen…

"I always want to play for Celtic, but I am going to be quite happy anyway.”

Lustig has been a fine servant to the Bhoys in his seven years at Celtic Park to date. However, the time may have come for Brendan Rodgers to begin planning for life without him. If the Scottish club are to progress and grow on the European stage then they must improve, and soon-to-be 32-year-old is not a player who is going to be getting better.

Celtic should let the veteran Swede go at the end of the season, and seek to replace him with a younger defender who’ll offer the club plenty of promise for the future.

What do you think, Celtic fans, should Lustig’s deal be extended or is his Parkhead journey over?
