Celtic targeting Jack Tucker this summer

Surprise surprise, Celtic are flying high at the top of Scottish football at the moment. Not only that, but they also stand an excellent chance of securing a place in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Neil Lennon has taken on the mantle from Brendan Rodgers excellently as they edge closer to yet another league title.

One of the most important members of the side has been Jeremie Frimpong. Signed from Manchester City last summer, he’s gone on to play 21 times in all competitions, only missing out in the squad over the last month due to an injury.

The 19-year-old has been a breath of fresh air for Celtic but his development may well stutter if they secure one of their summer transfer targets.

The man in question is Gillingham defender Jack Tucker. The 20-year-old has the ability to play as a centre-back and on the right-hand side of the defence so is clearly a versatile performer.

However, Rangers are also chasing the Gills youngster who is rated at £1.5m so an intriguing transfer battle could be about to take place.

Where the defender’s future lies remains to be seen, but if Celtic do end up recruiting him, it will be a rather strange addition.

The Hoops have a number of options available to them at centre-half, ranging from Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien to Hatem Elhamed too.

Should Celtic sign Tucker?

That’s proven to be useful when Neil Lennon moved to a three-man defence, but with such options ahead of Tucker should he arrive, it’s difficult to see how he’d get into the side centrally.

Thus, with fewer options at right-back, exemplified by the fact Lennon moved to a three-back once Frimpong was injured, the Gills youngster may have to operate there instead.

Who scored the winning goal of the first Old Firm derby of the 21st century?

He’s played five times on the right in 2019/20 so may well end up being Frimpong’s closest challenger for a place. At similar ages, their development is closely tied together but they could have an adverse effect on each other if they’re in the same squad.

With Celtic’s vast defensive options in mind, a move for Tucker fails to make much sense. They’d be wiser saving money for elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Celtic fans have been BUZZING over one of their brightest prospects…
