Opinion: Celtic should make a move for free-agent Jerry Mbakogu

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers should attempt to rectify his side’s recent struggles in front of goal with a move for striker Jerry Mbakogu who is available on a free transfer.

What’s the situation?

The Bhoys currently sit in sixth place after six games played in the Scottish Premier League, below Kilmarnock who scored a late goal to beat them 2-1 on Sunday.

The Hoops have also scored only three goals in their last four matches in all competitions, and have failed to put games to bed when they have been on top, evident in the recent 0-0 draw with St Mirren.

Striker Leigh Griffiths has scored his side’s only goals in the last two matches, but including the Scottish international, Rodgers has just three strikers in his squad after Frenchman Mousa Dembele was allowed to leave for Lyon on deadline day in a £19.7m deal. The 22-year-old’s goals and impact on the team are proving difficult to replace too after he netted 51 times in all competitions during his two year stay with the club.

Former loanee and fellow Frenchman Odsonne Edouard became the Bhoy’s record signing this summer and youngster Michael Johnston has also featured for the Bhoys, but Rodgers must bring in more competition for places if they are to improve.

Quick fix

An easy solution for Rodgers could be to target a move for free-agent Jerry Mbakogu, who left Italian side Carpi in the summer. Before that, Mbakogu was heavily linked with Leeds but a move never materialised.

The 25-year-old Nigerian has played most of his football in Italy and has a career record of 63 goals in 243 club appearances. While this may not be fantastic, Mbakogu is yet to hit his prime and his signing could kick Celtic’s other strikers into action after a faltering start to the season.
