Opinion: Celtic should re-sign John Guidetti after report suggests he wants to return

According to a report by Turkish media outlet Webaslan, Alaves striker John Guidetti is Galatasaray’s top January transfer target but the player would prefer a return to Celtic instead, and Brendan Rodgers should bring him back to Parkhead.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Sweden international is being linked with a move away from the Spanish club having struggled for first-team minutes this term, featuring for just 273 minutes in La Liga for the high-flyers.

The 26-year-old has provided no goals and just the one assist to date during the current campaign, and it appears more and more likely that he will look to leave in the New Year – whether it be on loan or permanently – to try and get some more game time.

Websalan report that Turkish giants Galatasaray are keen to bring the centre-forward to Istanbul, but that the Swede would prefer to rejoin Celtic having spent a season-long loan spell in Glasgow during the 2014/15 season.

Why should Celtic sign him?

Given he has failed to set the world alight at Alaves – he only has three goals and four assists in 26 appearances in all competitions for them – it might be controversial to suggest that Celtic should sign him, but they don’t exactly have a lot of striker options themselves right now beyond Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths.

Brendan Rodgers could certainly do with an extra body up top, and while he may not have impressed for his current club he did well for Celta Vigo previously, and showed that he can be a big hit in Scotland with 15 goals and 11 assists in 35 appearances in total for the Bhoys.

He is still relatively young considering how long he seems to have been around, and a loan deal until the end of the season could work out well for all parties involved.
