Celtic failed to replace Stuart Armstrong this summer, so they should atone for their error with a January move for Everton’s Kieran Dowell.
If there is one thing that annoys football fans more than anything else, it’s selling your best players without replacing them.
Celtic allowed both Armstrong and Moussa Dembele to leave this summer, and failed to sign a proper replacement for either of them.
It’s pretty clear the Hoops don’t want to spend money, so a loan move for Dowell in January makes perfect sense.
The 20 year-old was superb on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, but is yet to make a Premier League appearance for Everton this season, and has the goals from midfield to make Celtic fans forget all about Armstrong.
Arriving in the right place at the right time to score goals is a unique trait for a midfielder to have, and a rare commodity in today’s game. Armstrong was no Frank Lampard, but the 26 year-old scored 23 Premiership goals in 98 games for the Hoops, an impressive rate for any midfielder.
Dowell scored ten times for Nottingham Forest last season, and at just 20 years of age still has plenty of room to improve. The Everton youth product has found himself out in the cold this season though, and his stats from his spell with Forest suggest he could be the perfect Armstrong replacement.
The 20 year-old averaged a goal or assist every 180 minutes in the Championship, while firing in 2.3 shots per 90 minutes and creating two chances and completing 1.7 dribbles per 90 minutes.
Dowell is still very raw, but the youngster is intelligent, creative and hard working. Most importantly of all, he just knows how to grab goals from midfield, and a loan move makes sense for all parties.
So, Celtic fans, would you back a January move for Dowell? Do you think he could replace Armstrong’s goals? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
