Opinion: Celtic should take some pressure off Edouard by signing Origi

Celtic have hit some red-hot form in recent weeks, but the Bhoys should make up for their lack of summer transfer dealings by moving for out-of-favour Liverpool striker Divock Origi.

What’s the word?

Odsonne Edouard has been sensational since Celtic sold Moussa Dembele, but they simply must sign a direct replacement for Dembele.

At 20 years of age, Edouard is bound to go through some patches of bad form over the next couple of seasons, and Brendan Rodgers must be active in January to add to his striking department.

Origi could be the perfect signing, as the young Belgian has all the talent in the world but is totally bereft of confidence at the moment.

He played his first minutes of the season on Tuesday, coming on as a substitute during Liverpool’s defeat at Red Star Belgrade, and Rodgers could be just the man to get him firing again.

The boss was the one who signed Origi for Liverpool back in 2014, and the 23-year-old has shown glimpses of superstar potential.

The perfect reunion?

It’s impossible to judge Origi based on this season, because he has played just 11 minutes. This is no reflection on his ability though, as Roberto Firmino and the in-form Daniel Sturridge are not exactly easy to displace.

The versatile young forward has shown what he can do in the past though, and it was his goals that fired Liverpool to the Europa League final in Jurgen Klopp’s first season with the club.

At 23, he has already racked up 25 Belgium caps, scoring three times. His goalscoring record isn’t as good as it could be due to the fact he is often deployed on the wing, and this versatility means Rodgers could use him even when Edouard is firing.

Origi has devastating pace and power with or without the ball, and for a young striker his movement and runs are very intelligent. Once he gets a run of games and some confidence he is absolutely devastating in front of goal, and Liverpool are almost certain to cash in on him for a loss next year.

So, Celtic fans, would you back a move for Origi? Could he partner Edouard? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
