Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers currently has five centre-back options – six if you include the rare-ly seen Marvin Compper – to choose from following a tumultuous start to the season, with a shaky start for those that were playing in the absence of Dedryck Boyata before the transfer window slammed shut.
It seemed likely that the Belgium international was going to go at one stage, and with Jozo Simunovic, Jack Hendry and Kris Ajer looking far from convincing in the 27-year-old’s absence, it was also no surprise that the Scottish Premiership holders dipped into the transfer market to bring Leicester City’s Filip Benkovic to Celtic Park on a season-long loan deal.
The highly-rated 21-year-old was forced to wait for his debut for the 0-0 draw against St Mirren on Friday night having been an unused substitute in the Old Firm derby win previously, where Ajer and Boyata got the nod with Simunovic and Hendry both struggling through injury.
However, Rodgers switched to a back three meaning the trio all lined up on Friday, although Benkovic was replaced on the hour-mark as the Northern Irishman went in search of a winner despite his team playing 53 minutes with 10 men.
It seems likely that the former Liverpool boss will stick with four at the back in the main however, so we decided to ask Celtic fans to vote on our poll to see who they think the club’s best centre-back partnership is.
As you can see below, Boyata & Benkovic came out on top with 40% of the vote, and while Ajer is a clear contender alongside Boyata it isn’t enough for him to keep his spot in the starting XI.
