Celtic ace Mikael Lustig confirmed in the wake of the Bhoys’ Scottish League Cup final triumph that there has been no progress in his contract negotiations with the club, as reported by the Daily Record.

The defender’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and his future beyond that point remains unclear. However, he is still a regular in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI and has been in generally good form throughout this season so far.

At 31 years of age though, the time may have come for Celtic to seek Lustig’s long-term replacement.

Handing the 73-cap Sweden international a new contract now would likely be a poor decision from a financial perspective, as the long-serving defender is not an improving player and could begin to decline very quickly.
