Celtic are interested in signing Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers, according to The Daily Record.

What's the story?

The Hoops have already spent money this summer after making moves for Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo.

While the defence has clearly been the priority thus far, the club also missed out on a move for midfielder David Turnbull, who failed a medical after terms had been agreed with Motherwell for his transfer.

Now it appears that Neil Lennon and his recruitment team are moving on to other central midfield targets, with The Record reporting that Sawyers is an attractive option at £2.5m.

The 27-year-old is entering his peak years but only has one year left on his contract, and the Hoops are considering making a move having been a fan of his since 2015, according to the report.

Do Celtic need more midfielders?

With right-backs and another central defender needed before the club head deeper into European qualifiers over the next two months, the defensive line should be Celtic's big priority.

However, there soon could be need for a midfielder too after Olivier Ntcham's stated desire to leave the club, having been disappointed that a switch to Porto did not happen last summer.

The French 23-year-old has criticised the standard of opposition in Scotland and wants to move to a bigger league, citing interest from Marseille as "flattering" to L'Equipe.

With interest in Tom Rogic also reported over the last week, the Hoops need options and Sawyers is a viable one.

The St Kitts & Nevis international has vast experience of English football, with over 250 career appearances across the Championship and League One.

A creative talent who pitched in with seven assists last season, his style of play would fit well into Celtic's dynamic and ambitious midfield.

His arrival for a reported £2.5m would allow Celtic to move Ntcham on this summer and cash in on the Frenchman's talents, picking up a replacement and making a profit for reinvestment in other areas of the team.
