Signing Benkovic would be a big mistake from Rodgers and Celtic

Celtic have been linked with a loan move for Leicester defender Filip Benkovic, but the 21 year-old is the complete opposite of what Brendan Rodgers should be looking for.

What’s the word?

According to reports, Rodgers wants to bring in one more defender more the window closes, and now The Daily Mail have claimed Leicester City’s Benkovic is a target.

The Croatian defender joined the Foxes this summer for a fee of around £13m, but is expected to be behind the likes of Wes Morgan, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Caglar Soyuncu in the centre back pecking order.

The report claims Dedryck Boyata could still leave Celtic despite playing and scoring in the win over Hamilton, and that Benkovic is being lined up as a replacement.

Would he be a good signing?

There is no question that Benkovic is a good defender. The 21 year-old is 6 ft 4 in tall, surprisingly fast for his size, and has been capped for Croatia’s U-17s, U-19s and U-21s.

Benkovic made his name at Dinamo Zagreb, where he scored six league goals in over 50 appearances and performed well in their brief spell in the Champions League.

However, the Hoops already have young centre backs in the likes of Jack Hendry and Kristoffer Ajer, so what they need is a more experienced figure to come in and lead the defence.

Ajer is already showing glimpses of being a superb defender, but putting him next to a 21 year-old is a disaster waiting to happen. The Hoops need a commanding figure with the experience and nous to guide Ajer and Hendry through the season, not another player who himself requires guidance.

So, Celtic fans, do you think Benkovic would be a good signing? Or should you be targeting more experience? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
