Tottenham Hotspur announced on Tuesday night that they had reached an agreement with MLS outfit Montreal Impact for the transfer of Victor Wanyama.

Celtic were strongly linked with a loan move for their former player in January, but the midfielder ultimately remained at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond the deadline.

What's the latest?

Wanyama's brother recently revealed that there would soon be an announcement on the Kenyan's future and that has now arrived.

Indeed, the 28-year-old is on his way to Impact, who are managed by former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

Celtic allegedly wanted to sign Wanyama during the January transfer window but had concerns over his long-term fitness.

The midfielder had not been involved in a single Premier League squad since Jose Mourinho arrived, playing just nine minutes of Champions League football under Spurs' new head coach before his exit was finally confirmed.

Tottenham had reportedly been open to the idea of loaning Wanyama back to Celtic in the winter window but talk of a return to the Hoops has now ended.

Were Celtic ever likely to complete a deal?

According to the London Evening Standard, Spurs were willing to pay "a significant chunk" of Wanyama's £62,000-a-week wages to allow him to return to Celtic Park in January, with the proposed deal understood to have included an option to buy clause.

The fee with Montreal impact has not been disclosed, but it is not too much of a surprise that the Kenyan has left Europe behind to move to the MLS.

The news will undoubtedly come as a blow to Celtic, who had the midfielder between 2011 and 2013, when he made 91 appearances in all competitions.

Neil Lennon's side have now been left wondering what might have been as the 6 ft 2 ace heads for North America.

Meanwhile, Celtic's boss has had this to say on Odsonne Edouard's future.
