Celtic are interested in signing Sheffield United right-back George Baldock, according to The Daily Mail.

What's the story?

Baldock has recently won promotion to the English Premier League with the Blades, but the paper say that the player is interested in a move to Celtic and could be let go by manager Chris Wilder.

With just one year left on his contract, the Hoops are said to have opened talks about the potential transfer already, making an initial approach on Tuesday and discussing an opening offer.

If things move quickly, it appears he could become one of Neil Lennon's first signings this summer.

What Celtic need?

Celtic definitely need a right-back this summer.

Cristian Gamboa and Jeremy Toljan have both left the club, leaving just Mikael Lustig, who has yet to commit to a new contract beyond his current deal at Celtic Park, which expires this month.

Baldock, at 26 years of age, is a player in his prime who would be a significant upgrade in the position having impressed in the English Championship last season.

Lustig just doesn't have the all-round game to be Celtic's first-choice right-back anymore and Baldock's pace and strength will give the Hoops a new dimension on that side of the pitch.

Some would argue Baldock is good enough to give the Premier League a go next term and that makes him more than good enough to be successful in the Scottish Premiership.

If Celtic can work out the details they should move quickly to sign him considering how difficult they've found it to recruit in the position in recent years.
