While Nicholas and Larsson grabbed the headlines, the contributions of Frank McGarvey and Chris Sutton will never be overlooked.

Like central defenders the real strength of a striker is generally in the partnership and support he gets from his striking team-mate.

Until two years ago, playing one striker would never have been given air-time in Celtic circles with all of the great strikers happy to share the glory with a very significant other.

The support or secondary striker may have played in a more withdrawn role but was always knocking in or about 20-goals a season - the figure that John Hartson set as the basic requirement of any Celtic striker.

Like the main striking position there are so many contenders for this position, when you review things you get an even greater appreciation for the striking talent that Celtic have came up with over the generations.

Leigh Griffiths won't be the only person hoping to see a revival of the position...

With over 100 goals to his name, big John provided lots more than just support to the team.

Alongside Henrik Larsson and Maciej Zurawski, the Welshman put his body in the line for the team.

Hartson used his bulk to maximum advantage but could play a fair bit as well with his spectacular goal at Anfield one of the highlights on the road to Seville.

He cost £6m from Coventry 15 years ago and was worth every penny.

CHRIS SUTTON

It's strange to think that there may be a generation of fans who know him as the guy on BT Sport rather than the selfless striker who 'put Rangers in their place' with a dynamic debut season in Scottish football.

With minimum preparation time Sutton hit it off instantly with Henrik Larsson as they plundered the goals that delivered the 2001 treble before re-establishing Celtic in Europe.

Sutton played the game in his head, used his physique well and had the perfect attitude to succeed despite arriving as a '£10m Chelsea flop'.

FRANK MCGARVEY

Very much the team player, McGarvey put the jersey before his own personal needs with Charlie Nicholas the main beneficiary.

He joined in March 1980 with the gate money from the Real Madrid match and although the league slipped away in disappointing circumstances, there was plenty of successes to be enjoyed in the years ahead.

Brian McClair and Mo Johnston were among others to benefit from McGarvey, who departed on the high of heading the winning goal in the 1985 Scottish Cup Final.

KENNY DALGLISH

Could have been nominated for a number of positions but put in here to create the prospect of a Dalglish-Larsson strike force.

The golden bhoy of the Quality Street Kids there is little doubt that he was a favourite of Jock Stein, when he was sold to Liverpool in 1977 it was the beginning of the end for Stein.

Dalglish starred in some great Celtic sides either as an attacking midfielder or in a striker role. His all round ability and awareness was second to none and required team-mates on the same wavelength.

He'd be a cert to be voted into almost any select side of the last 50 years but it's best to put it to the test of the Football FanCast jury!

HARRY HOOD

harry-hood

Picked up the post Lisbon baton and plundered 123 goals making him a member of the exclusive centurion club.

After a spell in England with Sunderland Hood was signed for £40,000 from Clyde and made an instant impression as the fourth title in the nine-in-a-row run was secured.

Whoever else was in the side, Hood could be relied on to be among the goals whatever the competition. As a local he took particular pleasure from scoring against Rangers scoring a Hampden hat-trick against the Ibrox side in the semi final of the 1973 League Cup.
