Cast your minds back to last summer and it was perhaps a remarkable occurrence that Alfredo Morelos stayed at Rangers.

The Colombian had previously admitted he'd leave and was courted specifically by the Premier League. However, he ended up remaining with the Light Blues at Ibrox.

Since then, he’s gone on to score 29 goals in all competitions. More incredibly, though, is that he’s yet to find the net at all in league and European action during 2020.

The 23-year-old is a perpetual enigma. On his day, he’s a rampant physical beast capable of destroying teams. However, at his worst, he cuts a frustrated figure who looks slow, sluggish and hapless in front of goal.

Unfortunately for the Gers, their European first leg encounter with Bayer Leverkusen saw the second Morelos turn up. In a match where much depended on their star man firing, he was as far from the effervescent presence we’ve come to remember in recent years.

The striker wasn't at his best, turning in a performance that has typified his year – one which should be leaving manager Steven Gerrard rather speechless.

Against the German outfit on Thursday evening, Rangers lost 3-1 but it could have been a far more triumphant night if it wasn’t for individual mistakes. George Edmundson slipped and then in the next phase of play left his arm out and gave away a penalty.

Morelos, meanwhile, was sloppy in front of goal. He spurned two big chances, one of which came in the second half when he was slipped in delightfully by James Tavernier. The big Colombia international got away from his marker but instead of firing across goal, tried to catch the keeper out at his near post – the attempt lacked much conviction, though.

Ryan Kent has taken a huge amount of criticism for his inconsistent displays recently and again he was unconvincing against Leverkusen – losing possession 18 times. However, Morelos was the man who deserved the slack this time.

Former Gers man Neil McCann summed things up nicely: “For a man of Alfredo Morelos' ability, a couple of the chances he had tonight were not difficult. I don't know where his mind is at but it must be a huge source of frustration for Steven Gerrard.”

Indeed, it’s rather difficult to see where his headspace is at. Gerrard has already disciplined him in recent weeks for failing to come home on time after a trip to Colombia and his lacklustre record this calendar year is a significant cause for concern.

Rangers are 13 points behind Celtic in the race for the SPFL title but it seems hard to envisage how they’ll narrow the gap. The Gers boss has a big decision over whether to continue playing him.
